Calder Casino & Race Course to Put Sunshine State in Spotlight for 11th Florida Million

Tags: Calder News | November 02, 2012
Calder Casino & Race Course, in conjunction with the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association (FTBOA), will host the 11th Florida Million, an afternoon dedicated to thoroughbred racing in the Sunshine State, on Saturday, November 10.
The Florida Million features eight stakes, restricted to registered Florida-bred horses and named in honor of Florida racing dignitaries, totaling $1 million in purse money to be won, featuring the $150,000 Carl G. Rose Handicap, named for the man widely considered the founder of the Florida thoroughbred industry, and the $150,000 Elmer Heubeck Distaff Handicap, which honors a Florida racing pioneer that was involved in the industry for over six decades.
Since its inception in 2002, the Florida Million has proven to be a late-autumn showcase for both locally-based horses that have competed at Calder throughout the year and Florida-bred runners that have summered in parts north.
In 2011, the Todd Pletcher-trained Turbo Compressor used his victory in the Carl Rose as the leaping off point for a 2012 campaign where the son of Halo’s Image won the Grade 1 United Nations Handicap and the $500,000 Colonial Turf Cup, while the Calder-based My Pal Chrisy upset the Elmer Heubeck, defeating all northern raiders en route to her fourth win of the season.
General parking and admission to Calder Casino & Race Course is free. Reservations for the Turf Club and for the Clubhouse Dining Room on Florida Million day are encouraged. Reserved box seating packages are also available. For more information, or to make reservations, call (305) 625-7227.
